Calamity Jane, Milton Musical Society, Regent Centre, Christchurch
CALAMITY’S method of using a gunshot to silence people – and, unfortunately, the over-amplified bass on the keyboard – ensure that no-one sleeps through this well-staged show, which is a pretty lively affair proving that this 40 year old society still has plenty to offer when it comes to performing a musical.
The production has a lot going for it, not least a tremendously vivacious cast: there’s nothing better than seeing a company really looking as if they’re enjoying themselves on stage, and their smiles were a joy to see. And those lovely, colourful costumes are a treat too. On the down side, there were a few ‘first-night’ elements in the occasional slow pace and frequent prompts, but hopefully those things will pass quickly as the performers get into their stride.
Marie Coltman is ideally cast in the title role, and there is a palpable chemistry between her and the other three main performers, Syd Young (Wild Bill Hickock), Matthew Stevens (Lt. Danny Gilmartin) and Jo Mansfield (Katie Brown). All four score highly in the acting stakes too, as do Martin Mansfield’s appealing Francis Fryer and Michele Moulin-White’s feisty Susan.
Yep, the Golden Garter is the place to be.
