Review

London Pride, Pelhams People, Kinson Community Centre

THERE’S nothing like a good old sing-song and this concert, with proceeds going to Children in Need and Cancer Research, provided that in spades.

And with a first half consisting of old time music hall songs, it didn’t take much encouragement for the audience to join in with the likes of Show Me the Way To Go Home, Waiting At the Church or the Lambeth Walk.

Part two brought lively songs from My Fair Lady, Gigi, Half A Sixpence, Mary Poppins and Oliver, plus appearances from the Rita Jenvey School of Dancing and a couple of sketches and monologues.

Costumes, particularly those for the Ascot Gavotte, were outstanding and there was plenty of attention to detail with props. What a lovely idea too to give out small bunches of flowers during the opening number, London Pride. Perhaps that was what they were.

It was impressive that everyone on stage looked to be thoroughly enjoying themselves, and although there were one or two occasions when accompanist and singers were slightly at odds with one another, or when direction might have been slightly tighter to avoid too much random movement, the standard was generally very reasonable and made for a most enjoyable evening.
