Music, Myth and Legends, BOS Musical Company, Regent Centre, Christchurch

DURING this ‘theatrical extravaganza of song and dance’ one of the characters stated ‘this is hell’. Well, it was far from being that although I didn’t feel we were quite in heaven either.

The first part comprised make believe, magical tales, days of derring-do and heroes and villains, giving plenty of scope for an eclectic selection of numbers ranging from Bohemian Rhapsody and Cinderella Rockefella to Reviewing the Situation and Suddenly Seymour.

Part two, Legends, brought us some fine impressions of the likes of Judy Garland, Vera Lynn, Celine Dion and Elvis, and in this section Phil Redgrave, in my view a true star and legend himself, wowed the audience as Al Jolson, Mario Lanza, Sammy Davis Jnr and Frank Sinatra.

Finally we were taken above and below, where we met Satan, mortals, gods and can-can dancers, but with ne’er a heavenly harp or angel to be seen – although Karen Wells’ ever-present valkyrie was a jolly good substitute, and probably far more amusing.

The company has a lot of talent in both its younger and older members and this, combined with a great concept, super costumes and excellent lighting effects, made for an enjoyable evening, albeit one that wasn’t really an extravaganza.
