One-Act Play Evening, Arena Theatre, Guildhall, Boscombe
FORCED by lack of funds to cancel their planned production at the Regent Centre, the one-act play evening that replaced it proved beyond any shadow of doubt that this company’s talent needs no razzle-dazzle to help it shine through.
The audience was treated to an evening of highly-polished fun, played in the round with the barest minimum of set and props, and it couldn’t have been more enjoyable.
Pamela Brewer, Jane Haynes and Nick Guy performed three short monologues – Victoria Wood’s Giving Notes & Bronte Burgers, and Gerard Hoffnung’s The Bricklayer, all of which had everyone rolling in the aisles and in the mood for what was to follow.
David Tristram’s Last Panto In Little Grimley seems to be following me around at the moment, and this was the third time I had seen it this year. But was I bored? No way. Perhaps it was being in such close proximity to the actors – Pamela Brewer, Nick Guy, Lindsay Edwards and Tim Wallace-Abbot – that made it so hilarious, but those four simply were the hapless members of a dreadful amdram group putting on a panto written by their director, and I laughed till I cried.
More please, Arena.
