The Whole Truth, KCA Players, Kinson Community Centre

IMAGINE the horror of twice being accused of a murder you know you did not commit, yet being aware that the police have so much evidence pointing to your guilt that the outcome seems a foregone conclusion.

That is the plot of this Philip Mackie thriller, the twist being that the audience knows the truth from the beginning so the suspense comes from wondering if the real murderer will eventually trip himself up and reveal his thoroughly plausible story to be a pack of lies.

Director Steve Watton took on the major role of film producer Lewis Paulton when his original leading man dropped out, and although that situation would not usually be ideal the production does not seem to suffer and ill effects.

Annie Robertson is well cast as Lewis’ wife, Brenda, as is Steve James as the mysterious Carless, and David Wickham is in good form as police inspector Brett, although I was a little bemused by his accent, which didn’t seem to fit someone who had been educated ‘at a council school’.

Set, props and lighting are very effective, and I was particularly impressed by the menacing ‘mood music’ that was played between acts, creating just the right atmosphere.
