One Night Only, BBLOC, Regent Centre, Christchurch
THIS concert promised us the stars of Las Vegas on our doorstep, and whilst it may not have done that exactly to the letter it certainly gave us the stars of BBLOC - and they clearly have many.
Much of the credit must go to the mega-talented director/choreographer/musical director Dale Waterworth for bringing us almost two hours of non-stop razzmatazz and sparkle with originality and slickness. Talking of sparkle, which the excellent costumes certainly provided, maybe a glittering back-cloth would also have helped, as there were times when the stage looked a little gloomy, but maybe I’m being too picky.
In the first half the cabaret-style set was a great idea and I loved the fact that the cast wandered on and off stage, seemingly at random, so there was always something to catch the eye.
We were treated to the songs of the Rat Pack, Elton John, Shirley Bassey, Elvis, Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, Barry Manilow and more, all performed with real style. It seems invidious to pick out favourites but I just loved Sally Wheeler’s Don’t Rain On My Parade and John Gerken and Ian Metcalfe’s wonderful take on Something Stupid.
The show, during which almost £600 was raised for the Haiti disaster, is repeated next Saturday at the Layard Theatre.
