Cinderella, Burley Players, Burley Village Hall

VILLAGE pantomimes often have a charm all of their own, with local references galore and a cast drawn from the local community, ensuring an easy rapport with the ever so slightly partisan audience. This one certainly falls into that category, and makes for a thoroughly entertaining evening as a result.

Annie McTaggart’s production bubbles along at a cracking pace and her cast do her proud, while musical director Pamela Berry also deserves a gold star for everyone’s spirited, tuneful singing. The show also ticks all the right boxes in terms of a good script that is an unusual take on the old story, colourful costumes, a very impressive ‘chase’ scene, small children to provide the ‘aah’ factor and  well-known songs – although I have a feeling that in my sleep I shall be singing the community number, Bibbidy Bobbidy Boo, for quite a few nights to come.

There are some great principal performances too, notably Tamsin Fawn (Cinderella), Kamya Rawstron Brake( Prince Charming),Gerry Kendall (Buttons), Steve McTaggart (Duke of Verruca), Chris Duell (Mattie), Richard Pratt (Hattie), Paul Berry (Artchie), Sue Trotter (Baroness), John West (Baron), Sharon Street (Nip) Veronica Johnstone (Tuck) and Sandy Simpson (Fairy Godmother).
