Review
The Crucible, Regent Rep, Regent Centre, Christchurch
ARTHUR Miller’s powerful play about the Salem witch trials needs an equally powerful cast to perform it, and that is certainly what this fine production, superbly directed by John King, has in abundance.
The opening back projection of the village girls, Tituba and Rev. Parris in the forest sets the scene well for what is to follow, and the intensity of the performances as the accusations of witchcraft gain momentum left me, and I am sure most of the audience, emotionally drained.

Among an excellent 20-strong cast Ian Knight is outstanding as Deputy Governor Danforth, skilfully portraying the terrifying coldness of a man obsessed with upholding the law, while the performances of Gareth Richards and Tracey Challen as John and Elizabeth Proctor are truly heart-rending. Paul Nelson is also outstanding as Reverend John Hale, as are Zadie Ward as the troublemaking Abigail Williams and Rachael Towler as Mary Warren.
The final scene, with a light shining on the hangman’s noose as facts and figures from the trials are flashed onto a screen also proves a totally fitting ending to a production that proves without a doubt that last season’s Jamaica Inn was no flash in the pan.
