About Us

SCENE One is your guide to what’s happening on the local theatre scene in Bournemouth and the surrounding area, and it has been born out of my desire to keep alive something that has given me many years of pleasure.

My own involvement with the local amateur scene goes back to 1967, when as a 16 year old I joined Bournemouth Gilbert and Sullivan Operatic Society. I stayed there until the mid 1990s, with forays into P&P and BBLOC along the way.

I have been a writer and reviewer for Interval Magazine, covering professional shows in Southampton, Basingstoke and Chichester as well as locally. I’ve worked in Marketing for the Southampton Mayflower Theatre, and from 1998 until 2006 I was responsible for the Daily Echo’s weekly Curtain Call page, now sadly discontinued.
I do, however, still review for the Echo on a freelance basis.

The editor takes to the stage

My deputy editor, Lyn Richell, first became involved with drama in 1962 when she worked at a holiday camp and had to produce a weekly show. She has been a member of the Broadstone Players since 1969 both acting and directing. Most recently she has played Mum in The Anniversary and directed the Players’ centenary production of The Importance of Being Earnest.

Scene One needs your input as much as mine, so if there is something special happening in your society – a show, a fund-raising event, an awards ceremony – or if you need new members, props, backstage help or whatever, please let me know. The information will appear on this website and also in the free monthly magazine that will be available at every amateur show – assuming, that is, that you’ve told me about it. Crystal balls are hard to come by these days.

And if you’re a member of the public with no involvement other than as an audience member, I hope that here you will discover details of shows you were otherwise unaware of, and will be tempted to attend, because there are some great things happening in the amateur world and with your support they will continue to do so.
